Reiki therapy is now available at Care Wellness Center with our esteemed Reiki Master / Acupuncturist / Medical doctor, Cheryl Yelverton. Dr. Cheryl is a firm believer in the importance of balancing mind, body and soul by tapping into the mysterious and powerful forces of Qi via Reiki Therapy.
Reiki is a Japanese word often translated as “universal life-force energy” or “spiritual energy”. The reference to energy is similar in Japanese philosophy to a similar term in Chinese philosophy — Qi. Both refer to the force or power, potential and substance of life itself, a force or energy that is manipulated in acupuncture therapy and qi gong exercises.
Reiki, as a spiritual energy, operates at an even higher and faster vibration than the Qi present in the physical body and aura, so it can move through all parts of the human energy field to break through energetic blockages and promote healing. The source of this higher spiritual energy can be described in various ways in accordance with one’s preference — the universe itself, a higher spiritual power, the All That There Is or even God.
When we refer to Reiki in the West, we refer to a holistic healing system originally devised by a Japanese priest, Dr. Mikao Usui in the early part of the 20th century. It is a natural healing process that anyone can benefit from in the normal course of their life and that may also help and/or comfort anyone suffering from a range of conditions. It cannot be considered a “cure” for such conditions as the healing process may not manifest as curative of a specific condition.
Neither is it a religion or belief system. It can however, support and enhance other treatment forms, including conventional medical treatment and complimentary/alternative therapies.
Reiki energy is channeled by a practitioner who undergoes “attunement” to its frequency. Once attuned, the practitioner will always have access to this energy. Reiki is always used to heal for the greater good. It can do nothing else and can never be used otherwise.
The energy is directed by the source to the greatest need by the recipient. It can neither be directed for specific intent by the practitioner nor by the will of the recipient. So, saying a client’s need may not match his or her wishes, an understanding which should be reached before starting treatment.
Reiki attunement is performed on students of the discipline by a Reiki Master, usually through a ritualized adjustment of the student’s energetic frequency. There are three to four levels of attunement, depending upon where one studies, to reach the level of Reiki
Master as well as additional training to reach the level of Reiki Master teacher.
Practitioners are capable of healing themselves and healing others face to face after being attuned to the first level. Attunement to the second level is required before one can heal long distance either across physical distances or across time to the past or future. Reiki Masters have received attunement to even higher spiritual energies and learned more advanced healing techniques. Teachers have learned how to carry out the attunement processes for others.
Benefits and Effects of Reiki
Reiki will affect both practitioners and recipients on a physical level, an emotional level, a mental level and a spiritual level. At the physical level it supports and accelerates the body’s own natural ability to heal itself, typically alleviating pain and relieving other symptoms while helping the body to rid itself of poisons, toxins and negative energies. It balances and harmonizes the entire energy field (aura) promoting a sense of wholeness, a state of wellness and an overall feeling of positive wellbeing. It also helps one develop greater awareness of the body’s real needs, such as good nutrition and regular exercise.
On an emotional level, Reiki inspires one to examine one’s emotional responses, encouraging the release of negative emotions like anger, resentment and jealousy and promoting the qualities of caring, sharing trust and goodwill. It can also help one channel emotional energy into creativity.
On a mental level, Reiki leads to a state of deep relaxation, with the consequent release of stress and tension. It allows one to release negative thoughts, concepts and attitudes, replacing them with positive thoughts, peace and serenity. It can also enhance intuition and encourage one to pursue one’s personal potential through greater insight and self-awareness.
On a spiritual level, Reiki helps one to accept and love one’s whole self and fosters a nonjudgmental approach to humankind, allowing one to accept every person as a beautiful and pure soul energy as well as a human being. It promotes the qualities of love, compassion, understanding and acceptance and encourages one on their individual path toward personal growth and spiritual development.
The Reiki Treatment Session
Reiki is performed with the patient/client either lying down on a treatment table or sitting up in a chair, whichever is more comfortable. The initial consultation involves a discussion about the client’s desires and expectations with clarification of the potential and limitations of therapy.
If comfortable lying down, the client is then positioned comfortably supine (face up, lying on their back) and the session begins. The practitioner either lays hands on or hovers them over the positions on the body corresponding to the locations of the body’s chakras, channeling energy into each in turn and balancing them with one another. If desired or needed, energy can also be passed into the limbs.
The client is then turned either prone (face down, lying on their stomach) or on their side with their back facing the practitioner and the process is repeated through the back. The client may be swept of negative energy and their aura smoothed out. The client is then returned to a supine position and the session closed out.
If the client is sitting in a chair, treatment may be applied to both the front and back of the body simultaneously. Once the session is closed, he or she may need a little time to process the experience before exiting the table and the treatment room.
Treatment sessions, including consultation, will last 45 minutes to an hour. The initial consultation may take up to 90 minutes. Clients should be instructed not to consume anything toxic (like alcohol or excess sugar) the night before or day of prior to treatment and if possible, for several hours following treatment.
Clients should eat a light meal 1-2 hours prior to their treatment and then nothing to eat or drink until after the treatment. Clients should also be instructed to wear light, loose-fitting clothing to their treatment sessions. Clients will be encouraged to drink plenty of water after each session to facilitate the clearance of toxic compounds and energies.
Specialized treatments for specific issues such as healing past traumas can be discussed and arranged between practitioner and client during consultation. Distance healing can be arranged as well for clients who are unable to arrange an in-person appointment.
Distance sessions are conducted similarly to office visits, with the interview performed by telephone or video chat and the healing session conducted at a time convenient to both the practitioner and client, when the client will be able to relax and receive the healing sent. Once sent, the treatment cannot be “cancelled” and rescheduled so the client should make sure they are available at the agreed upon time. Distance treatments require the same amount of time as office visits.
What Patients Can Expect
The treatment itself is usually relaxing and peaceful. Clients may experience sensations of warmth or tingling where the practitioner’s hands are placed. They may see colors or have vivid dreams. Surfacing of old energy patterns may trigger emotional reactions or they may feel jerking of the muscles of the limbs. These are all perfectly normal and are signs of energy release from the body. Occasionally, clients may experience a “healing crisis” as temporary onset of cold symptoms in the days following a treatment as the energy works through blockages and the body rids itself of the previously bound toxic compounds and energies.
On the mental and spiritual levels, clients may experience shifts in consciousness or awareness, noting realizations about the causes of their problem(s). This is an important part of their healing and acceptable to discuss after their treatment if they wish to do so.
For clients with constitutional illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes or thyroid issues, Reiki may bring their bodies into better balance, requiring closer self-monitoring of their condition, possible reassessment by their physicians and adjustment of their medications by their physicians over time.
