Dr. Cheryl Yelverton graduated from Duke University School of Medicine in 1996, continuing on to complete a residency in General Surgery in 2003 and fellowship in Surgical Oncology in 2005, at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, Florida. She then entered into private practice in Broward County in the Memorial Healthcare System and in the HCA Healthcare System specializing in general surgical oncology and breast oncology for nearly 15 years until her retirement at the end of 2019.
In her own experience as a surgical patient, Dr. Yelverton has undergone a number of orthopedic operations herself, including bilateral hip replacements, the latest of which was in 2016. Her personal experience as a surgical patient strongly influenced her desire and efforts to ease her patients’ surgical discomfort and expedite their recovery as much as possible.
This led her to study and incorporate acupuncture and TCM into her practice after receiving it herself for preoperative and postoperative pain management at the time of her 2016 operation, an experience she described as transformative in its impact on her recovery.
She studied acupuncture in 2016 at the University of Miami and has since practiced a fusion of medical acupuncture and traditional acupuncture. Her personal experience and demonstration of the beneficial effect on her patients led her to pursue a more traditional education at the Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine where she is currently completing an advanced degree, DAOM, in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
