Reiki – Frequently Asked Questions

How does Reiki work?
Reiki is a special kind of spiritual energy that can only be channeled by someone who has been attuned to it. It is possible that some people are born with this attunement but most healers who have not received Reiki attunement from a Reiki Master are actually using some other kind of Qi or life force energy. Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy.

It raises the vibratory frequency of the field in and around the physical body where negative emotional energy has attached, causing disruption and clearing of the negative energy. Clearing away the negative and toxic and strengthening the natural field with positive energy straightens and heals the pathways, allowing the life force (the Ki) to flow in a healthy and natural way. Healers who have undergone Reiki attunement report a significant increasing in their healing energies after attunement.

Isn’t Reiki treatment similar to acupuncture?
Only in the sense that both affect the life force energy (Ki) of the body. Acupuncture works by redistributing that energy according to the needs and pathologies identified by the acupuncturist. Reiki healing is performed using a specific positive spiritual energy stronger than the natural energy of the body. The healing imparted by Reiki energy is directed by a higher spiritual force. The practitioner may channel but never direct the application of this energy, which is always used to heal for the greatest good.

Can Reiki healing cause harm?
No. Because Reiki is guided by the God-consciousness, it can never cause harm. It always knows what a person needs and will adjust itself to address that need. The practitioner is a channel for Reiki healing and does not direct the healing specifically, regardless of what is asked. The practitioner can only ask God or the universe to heal a need for the greater good. What healing is needed may not be what is desired by the client, only what the client truly needs.

Can you run out of Reiki energy?
No. Reiki practitioners only channel the energy of the universe, investing none of their own into a healing session. The Reiki consciousness considers both the practitioner and client to be in need of healing, so both receive treatment specific to their needs during a treatment session. Because of this, giving a treatment always increases the practitioner’s energy and leaves them surrounded with loving feelings of well-being.

Is Reiki a religion?
No. Reiki is spiritual in nature but not a religion. Neither practitioners nor clients are asked or required to change their religious or spiritual beliefs in order to participate.

Can Reiki take the place of regular medical care and treatment?
No. Reiki healing cannot substitute for conventional medical treatment. It can and does work in harmony with other forms of healing including surgery, medications, psychological counseling and alternative therapies, improving their results. Clients should never stop treatment started and directed by their medical doctors while receiving Reiki.

Is there scientific evidence that Reiki works?
Yes. Documented research results are available at the Center for Reiki Research

Is Reiki safe for pregnant women?
Yes. Since Reiki is guided by a higher spiritual force, the Reiki energy will know the condition of the recipient and adjust accordingly. Reiki can only do good, never harm. Many pregnant women have received treatment with great benefit to themselves and to their unborn children. Practitioners have also received attunement and treated others while pregnant, benefiting from the experiences as well.

Is Reiki safe for babies and children?
Yes, absolutely. Reiki always adjusts to the needs of the recipient. Since it is relaxing, both babies and children generally enjoy receiving it.

Are there any negative side effects from a Reiki treatment?
Generally, no. Most of the time a client will feel uplifted, peaceful and relaxed following a Reiki treatment. Occasionally, a person will experience a “healing crisis”. As their energetic vibration increases, stored toxins will be released into the bloodstream to be naturally filtered by the liver and kidneys. This is a natural detoxification and will only last a few days. During this part of the process, he or she should drink more water, eat lighter, clean meals and get more rest until symptoms pass.
