By Adam J. Friedman DC – Margate Florida – Chiropractic Health care is the second largest health care system in the United States, second only to traditional medical care. New figures released show that more and more people are using chiropractic health care for their healthcare needs and are getting better, naturally, without the use of drugs and surgery. Chiropractic health care is based on the premise that the human body will act to heal itself naturally, given the chance and in the absence of disease and other interfering factors.
Many diseases and dysfunctions begin when the body is unable to adapt itself to stresses within the environment, whether physical, chemical or emotional. The ability to properly respond to the environment is controlled primarily through the brain, the spinal cord, and the nervous system and their ability to communicate information to all other tissues within the body. All the body’s functions are controlled by this ability to relay information back and forth between the brain and all parts of the body, such as the kidney, the stomach, the gallbladder, the lungs, etc.
Chiropractic health care relies on proper communication of nerve impulses through the spinal cord and out over the network of nerves that link all of your body parts together. Removal of any interference which can be created by spinal bones (vertebrae) that have moved out of their normal position and are creating pressure on nerves is what Chiropractic is all about.
Very often, these initial simple stressors on the nervous system, called “subluxations”, may eventually evolve into more significant problems such as scoliosis, degenerative arthritis, headaches, allergies, sciatic pain, irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia.
Chiropractic physicians utilize the same generally accepted methods of examination as medical physicians, including a through case history, physical examination of your area of complaint, orthopedic and neurologic testing, range of motion testing, lab work, and diagnostic imaging.
A good Chiropractor will also perform a focused structural exam with particular attention to the spine and its relationship to your chief complaint (the reason you came to see the doctor). After diagnosing the functional deficits that are causing your problem, your Chiropractor will outline the treatment options open to you and create a plan of care specific to your condition.
Generally speaking, chiropractic health care involves a drug-free approach to healing, allowing your body to get back to a state of good health naturally. This is accomplished by use of the chiropractic adjustment; a controlled light force applied to joints of the spine or extremities that are not moving properly, in an effort to return the joint to its normal range of motion, relieving tension and irritation to the surrounding soft tissues and allowing nerve tissue to return to a non-irritated state.
If nerve tissue is irritated, it will not relay information accurately and will cause disease (loss of function) to whatever body part is served by that nerve tissue.
Chiropractic health care utilizes a natural, holistic approach to wellness that includes exercise programs, nutritional counseling, and healthy lifestyle modifications to assist the body to function normally and more efficiently.
Chiropractors work with medical physicians, acupuncturists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and many other types of healthcare providers to manage your condition. Many medical physicians today refer their neuromuscular and musculoskeletal cases to chiropractors because of the excellent results that are achieved with patients with natural healthcare.
