What are Chiropractic adjustments and why does your chiropractor want to do this to your spine? A chiropractic adjustment or spinal manipulation is a procedure which allows for moving the bones of your spine called vertebrae. This can be performed by hand or by instrument and is designed to put the bones of your spine back in their proper alignment relative to one another.
Why is it necessary to put the bones of your spine back in alignment? When you activate the muscles of your body to produce any kind of movement you use your spine. Vertebrae move by twisting and turning in many directions giving your body the ability to maneuver in all the various ways that we call movement. Normal daily activities such as sitting, standing, bending, walking, running and twisting place strain on the tissues of the spine and, over time, allow the vertebral segments to move out of their proper alignment.
Daily activities that we engage in such as driving, lifting, sitting and work produce stress on the spine. Recreational activities such as sports, boating, dancing and gardening also produce unusual stress and strain on spinal segments. Any kind of significant trauma such as automobile accidents or falling can severely impact spinal function and alignment.
When vertebrae become misaligned it creates pulling on the muscles and ligaments which attach to spinal vertebrae restricting normal movement. This restriction causes nerves to become irritated and inflamed. Once nerves are inflamed they produce spasm in muscle tissue setting up a repetitive cycle for abnormal movement and pain.
Some people feel as though getting their spine aligned isn’t that important, but if you think about it, the function of your spine is to protect your spinal cord and the nerves that emerge from your spinal cord and to allow your body to move uninhibited while providing that protection and support.
Your spine has to function 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year and never gets a chance to completely rest. Since your brain and spinal cord run all the functions of your body keeping this organ in the best possible shape makes a lot of sense, don’t you think?
