Back pain is the number two reason for visits to the doctor’s office, second only to coughs and upper respiratory infections. The cost of this epidemic is over 100 billion dollars annually in medical bills, disability and lost productivity at work. Other than the obvious causes such as automobile accidents and other types of trauma to the back, most lower back pain is caused by stress placed on the muscles and tissues of the spine due to being overweight and sedentary lifestyles.
In fact, for each pound of extra weight that is carried an extra 10 pounds of stress is placed on the lower back once you stand up in the morning. Couple this with the poor condition of the abdominal musculature, lower back musculature, and daily stresses we place on our spines, and you have the reason that legions of people suffer from this condition. Statistics show that about 80% of Americans will suffer back related pain at some point in their life.
With all these statistics medical science still has no perfect answer to deal with this condition. Surgery has been shown to be expensive, and extremely invasive, and in many instances outcomes are poor, however sometimes this is the only option left at the end of standard medical protocols.
Back pain can be broken down into 3 categories. Of all back pain, 80% is neuromuscular (pinched nerves/muscle spasms) in origin, 5% is related to disc problems, and 15% is related to organic causes such as cancer, prostate, or kidney problems.
If left untreated the lower back pain may subside, however the underlying cause of the problem rarely goes away. The usual progression of the condition is more frequent episodes or “flare ups” with increasing levels of pain and disability each time. Eventually, the misalignment of the spine causes degeneration of discs, narrowing of openings surrounding nerve tissue and permanent loss of function.
At CARE Wellness Center we are trained and experienced to deal with back pain. Our first goal is to accurately diagnose the cause of the pain. Once determined that your back pain falls into the 85% category of conditions that we can treat, you will be placed on a program of using the best combination of therapies including physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, stretching and strengthening exercises, to get you better in the least amount of time.
Our aim is to eliminate your pain, retrain your muscles, and fix the underlying functional imbalances which created your problem. Our program is thorough, our staff is caring and concerned, and our outcomes are excellent. If you fall into the 15% category that is not neuromuscular in nature you will be provided with referral options to the appropriate specialist. We proudly serve the communities of Margate, Coral Springs, Coconut Creek and Pompano Beach.
Because of the delicate structure of the neck, many everyday things can cause neck pain such as watching TV while leaning on the arm of the sofa, falling asleep in a chair with your neck unsupported, spending long periods of time at the computer, improper sleeping positions, or even sleeping under the fan or air conditioner. Temporary neck pain will usually resolve on its own within a day or two, if the offending activity is discontinued. However, when pain doesn’t go away for several days or longer, it usually indicates some kind of underlying condition that needs to be examined. One of the most common reasons for neck pain is the functional imbalance in the spine which results from vertebral misalignment.
When a vertebra (bone) is out of place, normal movement is altered causing stress on delicate spinal joints and surrounding soft tissues. This typically results in “a pinched nerve“. When this happens the body causes muscles surrounding it to tighten up to “splint” the area in an effort to prevent further damage to joints and nerves. As a result muscles and nerves become inflamed causing pain which can even radiate up into the head, down the arms, or into the shoulder blades. Numbness and tingling (needles and pins like when your foot falls asleep) may also be present into the arms or hands.
Most of the nerves which come from the spinal cord in the neck, typically exit through an opening called the IVF (inter-vertebral foramen). When the vertebrae become locked in place, they cause difficulty with the movement of the neck resulting in pain. Chiropractic care along with physical therapy and acupuncture can help to alleviate the pain, relax the muscles, and restore proper motion to these painfully fixated joints.
If left untreated, the acute pain will sometimes subside, leaving the fixation. When this occurs, the abnormal weight bearing of the head places increased stress upon the joints of the neck causing degenerative changes, spurring, bulging or herniated discs, and arthritis to occur. Over the long term these permanent changes affect not only the functional ability of the spine but cause permanent problems in the neck, shoulders, and upper extremities. Neck pain isn’t just a “pain in the neck” it can lead to much more!
At CARE Wellness Center our chiropractors, acupuncture physicians and physical therapists specialize in spinal conditions, such as neck pain. We can determine if you have vertebral misalignments, spinal degenerative changes, arthritis, herniated discs, or other types of conditions and we are properly equipped to treat you and get you back on track so that you can get on with your life!
